Capital Hill is the heart of Australia’s parliamentary system. On 12 March 1913, Lady Denman (the wife of the Governor-General) declared “I name the Capital of Australia, Canberra” from the top of Capital Hill. Add to Description →
Walter Burley Griffin based his design of Canberra around Capital Hill and in 1988 Australia’s New Parliament House was opened, constructed on Capital Hill, Canberra.
Aerial photos of Capital Hill highlight the unique design of the New Parliament House, where the central roof is covered with lawn and an 81 metre flagpole flying a massive Australian flag is the focal point of the design.
Capital Hill is surrounded by a network of roads similar to spokes on a wheel, including State Circle, Parliament Drive, Capital Circle, Canberra Avenue, Kings Avenue and Adelaide Avenue.
Nearby suburbs of Barton, Deakin and Parkes provide government offices, accommodation for parliamentarians and embassies. Parkes is also home to Old Parliament house which is often shown in aerial photos of the New Parliament House.
