Ballina is named after the Aboriginal word ‘bullenah’, meaning ‘place where oysters are plentiful’.
It is situated on the Richmond River, so named after the fifth Duke of Richmond. The river lazes its way to the sea and offers wonderful fishing for the keen fisherman. Sailing is another wonderful pastime on the river or ocean. Visitors may enjoy a languid day on the water, taking in the peaceful scenery during a local cruise.
Drive from East Ballina, over the Missingham Bridge, to Mobbs Bay, an ideal picnic spot and swimming beach. From here, take the ferry to South Ballina where there is another great family beach near the South Wall. The Ballina Swimming Pool is another great way to while away the hours, enjoying the water.
One of Ballina’s major industries is the production of Tea-Tree Oil. The tea-tree is native to the area and its oil has highly antiseptic properties. Sugar cane fields surrounding Ballina is another important local crop.
Ballina is quite flat town and offers a great cycling path where, from Lighthouse or Shelley Beach, you may be lucky to spot the many dolphins and other marine animals. In season, whale watching is a favourite pastime.
