Discover the Little Terns at Belongil Creek, explore the wreck of the SS Wollongbar situated at the end of Jonson Street, or walk Main Beach, directly in front of the town centre and continue on to Clarke’s Beach.
The best surfing break at Byron is found at The Pass, a gap between the mainland and Fisherman’s Lookout, where there is a great deck to check out the waves. If the surf is not good here, then head over to Watego’s Beach. This is more sheltered and is a popular surfing spot all year round.
Enjoy dinner on the free electric barbecues or head into town for some great places to eat. When the northerlies are coming in, then Cosy Corner, accessed by Tallow Beach Road, is the best bet for waves. Here you can watch the many brightly coloured hang-gliders launch from the cliffs above.
A must see is the Cape Byron Lighthouse, the most easterly land in Australia. It is situated in Cape Byron Recreational Area.
Byron Bay is an excellent spot for scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing and all water sports. Good sightings of humpback whales migrating to and from the Antarctic are obtained from the cliffs near the Cape Byron Lighthouse.
