Highgate Hill Information

Highgate Hill extends from South Brisbane to the Brisbane River. Parts of Highgate Hill have vistas of Brisbane City and others have views of St Lucia and Queensland University.

Aerial photos of Highgate Hill show the nearby suburbs of West End, South Brisbane, Woolloongabba, Kangaroo Point and Dutton Park. Schooling in this suburb includes St Itas Catholic Primary School and St Laurence’s College.

Highgate Hill was first settled in the mid 1800’s and was noted for the Ironbarks that grew nearby. Water was available via a natural spring on what is now Boundary Street.

A few houses were built on Highgate Hill in the later part of the 1880’s. One of note has been heritage listed. Kinauld was built in 1888 was family owned until the mid 1950’s. There are a number of fully restored Queenslander homes on medium sized blocks located in Highgate Hill.

Today Highgate Hill has large numbers of high density apartment buildings. Many of the buildings are higher than 10 stories. Torbreck was Brisbane’s first apartment building, built in 1960. It is a historic site and heritage protected.

Highgate Hill is known for the diverse culture that lives here and the wonderful multi-cultural food available from the many local restaurants.
