A mostly residential area, Bentley Park is growing rapidly due to the influx of young families into the region. Located in the southern corridor of Cairns, near Edmonton, the suburb has many community facilities. The sporting complex (as shown on this aerial photograph of Bentley Park) is accessible from Robert Road, nearby Vigilant Close and Golden Grove Drive. Add to Description →
Robert Road was named for an early settler whose property could be found at the end of the road. Bentley Park has many streets that are named after ships of note; Vigilant Close was named for a HMAS survey ship and Golden Grove Drive for a First Fleet store-ship. Another ‘ship street’ is Allinga Close, named for an Adelaide Steamer, as is Leeuwin Crescent after a Dutch Explorer ship which sailed down the Western Coast of Australia in 1622.
Blackfellow Creek is the main water source for the suburb and shares its name with the Primary School alongside it. The primary school is over 150 years old and the area has many streets named after the first few teachers. The water in Blackfellow Creek is essential for the local sugar cane farming, allowing the Sugarcane Tramway to continue through the suburb. Only functional throughout the sugarcane harvest, the Tramway passes through White Rock, Bentley Park, Woree and Earlville.
