Bungalow Information
With views out to Mission Bay, there are many inner city gems to be bought by the home owner or investor. Bungalow is a popular suburb with its short walk to the CBD. Mulgrave Road, originally called Hop Wah Road after the Hop Wah sugar Plantation, is the street to go to for bottle shops, florists and medical centres.
Brown Street is also light industrial with car yards and other businesses. It was named after Mr Lyne Brown, a former mayor of Cairns who was also a photographer. Lyons Street was named after a previous mayor, the same man who also established the Cairns Stock Exchange.
Hannan Street and Hobbler Streets were also named for previous residents. Hobbler was assistant mining engineer with the railway and Mr Hannan engineered the railway line through one of the local passes.
One street was not named after locals - Scott Street was named for the famous polar explorer Sir Robert Scott. However one of the main streets, Spence Street was named for the first sub-collector of customs in the 1870’s.
