Cardwell is a thriving seaside town halfway between Cairns and Townsville in Queensland. Cardwell is mainly known as the gateway to beautiful Hinchinbrook Island – and Hinchinbrook National Park which is Australia’s largest island national park. Add to Description →
Cardwell is the oldest town in North Queensland and was founded in 1864. Until Cooktown was established, the port at Cardwell was the only port between Bowen and Cape York. Gold from the Etheridge Goldfields and cattle was shipped from Cardwell port – although the going was difficult over the surrounding ranges in the wet season.
Aerial photos of Cardwell show it just to the north of the Hinchinbrook passage, with its many mangrove fringed creeks and fabulous fishing. Photos also show it surrounded by National Parks – with the nearby Edmund Kennedy National Park and Lumholtz National Parks.
Hinchinbrook National Park is almost 40,000 hectares in size and is dominated by the imposing Mt Bowen at 1142m. Walking tracks across Hinchinbrook Island take between 5-7 days to complete.
