Edmonton was the location of one of the first Sugar Mills in the Cairns region. Today it has become an outer suburb of the ever expanding city of Cairns.
Edmonton was originally named Hambledon, but had its name changed after Queensland Rail purchased it in the 1911. The irony is that the name has remained associated with the area, with the Mill, hotel and State School all bearing its original name.
Edmonton had become an up and coming suburb, with three state schools located within the area - Bentley Park State School, St Theresa’s Primary School and Hambledon State School. Entertainment at Edmonton can be found in the form of Sugarworld, a waterslide park which includes a pool, licensed bar, kiosk and large gardens and parklands.
