Mudjimba Island Information
The small uninhabited rocky island is home to a large breeding colony of mutton birds (wedge-tailed shearwaters). The waters around Mudjimba Island are popular for diving, snorkelling and surfing. The surfing community considers Mudjimba Island to be one of the best reef breaks in Australia and it is enjoyed by countless surfers each year.
The steep rocky platform around the island, clearly seen in aerial photographs of Mudjimba Island, prevents landing by boats and yachts in most weather conditions.
Mudjimba Island is known as “Old Woman Island” by the locals. The name is based on an Aboriginal legend. A woman grew into old age after being stranded on the island. Mudjimba Island is of high cultural significance to the local indigenous population, with the presence of a number of scar trees and middens located on the island.
