Launceston and Tamar Valley Information
Like many parts of Tasmania, Launceston is a major tourist centre. Tourists often flock to this area to visit many natural wonders and beautiful pieces of scenery. Attractions include the Cataract Gorge; only five minutes walk from the city, the City Park, the Tamar River and tributaries, the Tamar Valley, home to some of Australia's best vineyards, the Boags Brewery and Aurora Stadium, also known as York Park.
The Tamar Valley runs north-west of the city of Launceston to the coast, running on either side of the Tamar River. The valley itself follows the river for about fifty kilometres and is home to more than 20 vineyards that line the shores of the valley. Wine is one of Launceston's biggest industries, as the Tamar Valley provides the perfect location for the cultivation of the vines. Tourists can also view the process by traveling along the Tamar Valley Wineroute.
