Geographically, Melbourne is situated in the south-eastern corner of Australia, and is the southernmost mainland capital city. Its central business district is built along the Yarra River, with its suburbs flowing out to the east, meeting the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges, and following the Maribyrnong River. Melbourne's tributaries flow west and north to flat farming country, reaching further inland.
The city of Melbourne is also considered to be the sporting capital of Australia, hosting many of Australia’s great sporting events, including The Melbourne Cup, the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, the AFL Grand Final and the Australian Tennis Open. Melbourne also hosted the first Olympic Games in the southern hemisphere in 1956, and the Commonwealth Games in 2006.
Melbourne also embraces its ever changing lifestyle of food, fashion and festivals. One of the Australia's most popular tourist destinations, for national and international visitors alike, Melbourne boasts much to see and do within its borders. Besides its sporting events, Melbourne offers many cultural activities such as Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, New Year's Eve celebrations and the Moomba Waterfest, an annual tradition since 1955. Other places that are worthy of attention include the National Gallery of Victoria, the Eureka Tower (Melbourne's tallest skyscraper), Melbourne Zoo and the Shrine of Remembrance.
Melbourne is also known for its constantly changing weather conditions, with the phrase "four seasons in a day"? being used regularly to describe the various possibilities one might experience whilst holidaying in this city. Generally though, Melbourne experiences warm to hot summers with an average temperature of around 25.8 degrees, while winters are usually cool, temperatures often reaching around 14 degrees and during spring and autumn, the weather is often mild and balmy.
